Eastleigh is a popular suburb inhabited mainly by Somali immigrants. Nine out of ten women from the local Somali community have undergone FGM. While FGM is a dangerous practice itself, to many women the consequences are not fully known until giving birth. According to a study published by the World Health Organization in 2006, the extent of the complications increases according to the severity of the FGM. There is a 70 per cent increase in the number of women who suffer from postpartum hemorrhage in those with FGM III, compared to those women without FGM. The research found out that babies are also at risk during childbirth if the mother has had FGM. The death rate among babies during and immediately after birth is much higher for those born to mothers with FGM. Women give birth in Eastleigh every day, facing the consequences of what was done to them when they were small girls.
